There are just 51 days until Avoriaz opens its lifts for the start of the new season!
We don’t know about you but we’re feeling pretty excited about the prospect of getting our skis out of storage and onto the slopes of the magnificent Portes du Soleil once again.

As the countdown to winter 2016/17 begins we reflect on how the pioneering resort of Avoriaz continues to stand out from the crowd and why it’s so great to have it on our doorstep.

When Avoriaz welcomed its first guests in the winter of 1966 it was showcasing an entirely new concept, developed by a group of visionary architects whose ideas seemed rather absurd at the time. Creating an entirely car-free and completely ski-in/ski-out resort was unheard of in the 1960’s and to this day remains a novel feature that adds to the charm of this purpose-built winter wonderland.

Although the architecture is not necessarily in keeping with the traditional expectations of a French ski resort, there is something rather magical about the way the vast apartment blocks stand proudly on top of the cliff, overlooking Morzine. The new Prodains Express cable car is exceptionally efficient and whisks you up to 1,800 metres in just 4 minutes, so access from Morzine is incredibly easy, especially when you have a chauffeur-driven Land Rover Defender on hand throughout the day!
