Six reasons you should ski in the Portes du Soleil early this season

by 4 November, 2018

The Portes du Soleil has 650km of pistes and 197 lifts, making it the largest ski area in the world and the perfect winter holiday destination. The area is made up of 12 resorts spanning across France and Switzerland; the most well-known being Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz and Châtel. At the very heart of it all, Morzine is the largest town, offering a wide range of luxury accommodation including fully catered chalets and self-catered apartments.

No one wants to miss out on some of the best days on the slopes, yet many people do without knowing. Early season skiing may have had some bad press in the past, but it’s not completely true. Some of the most fantastic ski days can be had at the beginning of the season, either the week before Christmas or at the start of January.

Aside from the wonderful powder, there are many more perks of skiing in the weeks building up to Christmas. What are they you might be wondering? Allow us to let you in on 6 little secrets…

That Festive Feeling

The festive spirit here in the Portes du Soleil is like no other. With sparkling Christmas decorations, twinkling lights, log fires and not to mention REAL SNOW, there’s no better destination to get excited for the big day. Hey, you might even catch a glimpse of Santa!

It’s easy to get here

There’s an abundance of flights landing into Geneva every day throughout the winter and there are always great deals for you to take full advantage of at the start of the season. It’s just a short 1hr 15min transfer up to Morzine from the airport and we’ll help you organise transport through our partners at Alp Nav, who offer a slick and professional door-to-door service (with a 10% discount). So what are you waiting for? Don’t stay at home, come here!

Ski lesson availability

Ski tuition isn’t just for beginners and the quieter weeks of the season offer the perfect opportunity to really take your skiing to the next level. Our partners at New Generation and Peak Snowsports offer technical clinics and performance courses during the non-peak weeks to help you develop your skills while the pistes are far less crowded. The groups will be smaller and you won’t be wasting your time standing in lift queues, so you’ll be able to make the most of your time (and money) with the instructor!

It’s cheaper

Not only will your flights be cheaper but your accommodation with Morgan Jupe will be too! You’ll be paying about 35% less on average per week in January than you would be in February, which makes it a bit of a no brainer!

Wide open pistes and no queues

Make the most of the slopes being a lot less busy than they would be later in the season. Absorb those mountain views and those bluebird skies, because they are all yours and you deserve them! No one likes waiting in lift queues or struggling to get a lunch table on the mountain when the slopes are crowded so, this is the perfect time of year to enjoy your ski holiday without all the hustle and bustle.

Great snow

We had to bring it up again! Look for yourself, there is a very reliable snow record in the Portes du Soleil at the start of the season. Last winter (2017/2018) we had much greater snowfall in December and January than in February, March or April! Now if that’s not a good enough reason then I don’t know what is? It’s impossible not to want to get those skis on and tear up that fresh powder.

Have you booked yet?

If you still haven’t booked your early season ski holiday then it’s simply not too late.
