The Best Places to Stop Between Calais and Morzine

by 13 June, 2022

You may have read our blog about the best tips and benefits of driving to Morzine from the UK. But now you’ve made it to Calais, why not extend your holiday a little further? After all, you are already driving through one of the most beautiful parts of Europe, so wouldn’t it be a shame not to make the most of it? Not to mention all the delicious champagne you could sample along the way.

Sound appealing? Read on to find out about our favourite spots to stop over on your way from Calais to Morzine …

epernay

Épernay is around 3.5 hours south of Calais and is without a doubt worth a stop over for all you champagne lovers out there…

La Villa Eugene

La Villa Eugene is located up the top of the Avenue de Champagne, so it couldn’t be easier to walk into town for the tasting tours and to the restaurants. It’s a villa owned by the Mercier family and is appropriately grand without being stuffy. The staff have always been very friendly and speak fluent English. It has a lovely pool for the summer months and a cosy bar with a comprehensive champagne list as you would expect. There is a car park and breakfast is typically French, but they do not do lunch or dinner. It’s one of our favourite places to stay in Epernay.

la Demeure d’Elodie

La Demeure d’Elodie is lower budget than the last, it’s situated also on the Avenue de Champagne a little down from Villa Eugene. It is a holiday apartment with two bedrooms, a kitchen and living room and a small balcony. What makes it special is that it is located inside the beautiful chateau of Champagne Elodie D, a family owned working champagne house so you really feel like you’re getting the authentic experience.

The apartment itself is very nicely finished and is only about a year old. The hosts are ever so friendly and helpful and although they don’t speak English, they could not do any more for you. They will be sure to encourage you to taste their champagne, learn about the history of the house and if you have the time, visit their vineyards and production facility.

burgundy

Burgundy is one of the world’s greatest and most prestigious wine regions in the world. It’s around 6.5 hours south of Calais so the drive on to Morzine the next day is only around 3.5 hours.

Girolles les Forges

You don’t want to miss this chambre d’hôtes called Girolles les Forges, located in the Burgundy wine region, just 30 minutes or so from Chablis & Chitry. This is actually where we first found out about the producers of our house white wine, Domaine Colbois. It’s run by a really lovely couple who offer the option to organise a dinner at their kitchen table which is quite an experience… highly recommended.

It’s a little bit off the beaten track but it’s simply gorgeous. You need to detour via Paris and down through Auxerre to reach it.

dijon

La Rôtisserie du Chambertin

Last but definitely not least, we are huge fans of a lovely little hotel called La Rôtisserie du Chambertin which is in a place just outside Dijon called Gevrey-Chambertin. Some of the best wine in the world is produced here so it’s definitely one for the bucket list.

The reception area is a large open space with a huge fireplace and big comfortable sofas with views out onto the terraces. The whole decor and development of this old property mixes a contemporary feel with the old and it is very pleasing on the eye. There are two different restaurants… one fine dining and the other more “bistro”. Why not organise a wine tasting session in one of the restaurants whilst you’re here?

So there you have it. Our favourite spots to stop from Calais to Morzine. And the fun doesn’t stop there! Once you arrive here you have a short or long break in one of our apartments or chalets to look forward to. We’ll see you soon!
