Why Morzine is the Perfect Destination for Advanced Skiing

by 24 December, 2019

Aside from the breathtaking views, a great selection of restaurants, apres ski bars and an abundance of fantastic accommodation, Morzine is also renowned for its massive ski area and wide variety of pistes making it perfect for advanced skiing.

We’ve already told you why it’s the perfect destination to learn to ski, now it’s time to find out why it’s also a haven for advanced skiing too!

it’s the largest ski area in europe

The Portes du Soleil has 650km of marked pistes and around 200 lifts, making it the largest ski area in Europe and the perfect winter holiday destination. The area is made up of 12 resorts spanning across France and Switzerland; the most well-known being Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz and Châtel. At the very heart of it all, Morzine is the largest town, offering a wide range of luxury accommodation including fully catered chalets and self-catered apartments.

With such a large ski area to cover, you can come back year after year and never run out of new terrains to explore and enjoy advanced skiing!

thEre’s lots of fun to be had on and off the piste

Whether you love to glide down a freshly groomed piste, feel the smoothness of soft powder under your skis or impress your fellow skiers in the park, Morzine has something for everyone!

PISTE SKIING

There are 26 red runs in Morzine/Les Gets and 104 in Portes du Soleil. You will also find 8 black runs in Morzine/Les Gets and 27 in Portes du Soleil.

There are many more difficult pistes on the Avoriaz / Swiss side of the mountain and you’ll never run out of pistes to ski. The most difficult one in the Portes du Soleil is known as the ‘Swiss Wall.’ It is one of the most daunting descents you’ll probably ever face. If the warning sign ‘for experts only’ doesn’t deter you, then the sheer angle of the descent might. Do you have what it takes?

OFF PISTE SKIING

Given how vast the Portes du Soleil ski area is, it’s probably no surprise to hear that there are plenty of great places to find off-piste skiing too, from the edge of the slopes and into the backcountry.

If you don’t fancy hiking and would like to access the powder from the lifts then the best places to do that are the Nyon and Chamossière ski peaks. We recommend that you hire a guide or book a day with our partners at Peak Snowsports who are guaranteed to show you the adventure of a lifetime.

If you are going to ski off piste yourself, then let us know in advance and we can help to organise avalanche equipment.

SNOWPARK

The Portes du Soleil has 11 snow parks and 4 boarder cross courses at strategic points around the ski area. All parks feature boxes, tables, wall rides, big air jumps, raised bends, air bags and rails that riders of all levels will be more than happy with!

A few of our favourites are; La Chapelle, Nyon, Les Crosets and the Stash.

LIFTS AND FACILITIES

As previously mentioned, there are around 200 ski lifts in the Portes du Soleil. This means it’s incredibly easy to get around the mountain and explore 650km of pistes. As an advanced skier you’ll be itching to cover as much terrain as possible and the facilities around the whole area make it very easy to do so.

The PDS lift pass is reasonably too as “internet” price for an adult for 6 days is €270 (compared to €312 for 3 valleys, which is the next largest ski area in Europe).

There are some brand new lifts for winter 2019/20 which we are very excited about!

our driving service gets you on your way

Our friendly and professional drivers are available every day from 8.30am – 7.30pm so that you can access the chalet, slopes and town with absolutely no hassle. This means we can take you to any of the local ski lifts to set you off on your next adventure!

If you have any questions regarding your next skiing adventure then please don’t hesitate to ask. We might be masters of the luxury chalet industry but we also know the area like the back of our hand!
